Cafe: High Society

High society is part of That CD Shop and you can find them at Pacific Plaza or Marina Bay Sands. (I went to the Pacific Plaza one). As we approach the cafe, it has this distinctive design of chequer Italian marble flooring, golden chandeliers and white walls with golden frames. Basically, it looks atas from the outside. They do sell mains here but I guess it's better for you to come here for a high tea or just chill over some desserts and a coffee.

With Ally's recommendation, we made a visit here after our shiok maki dinner at Wisma. The desserts on the shelves looked really appealing to us so we quickly got ourselves some seats and decided on our desserts. The entire cafe was quiet, and the seats we were comfortable. Lights were slightly dim, feels pretty calm and peaceful right in the middle of a busy orchard road.

Oh... something that I thought was pretty bad? The waitress. She took our orders.. and then she forgot all about them.. made her colleague to come over and take our same orders AGAIN. When we told her that her colleague had already taken our orders she told us "oh, my colleague forgot what you ordered". Like seriously? I'm not sure about you but, I didn't/never would have expected that coming. I think that waitress needs extra training, like really.

Though there's no 'wow' factor in the desserts and it ain't that affordable (in my opinion) but it's okay to dine here once in awhile for a good high-tea relaxation with your friends. (cause the ambiance is good) If you're someone who's really anal about service (sometimes I get a little too affected about such stuff...) then maybe you won't want to come here and increase your blood pressure.

It's really tough for me to say if I'd come back again or not. I'm pretty neutral bout this place.

*As this was unexpected last minute decision, I didn't bring my camera along. All photos are taken with iPhone 5.

Cafe: Arbite

You could miss this space if you're not paying attention to it. A tiny door leads you to the second floor where you'd find Arbite Cafe at Serangoon Gardens. I used to come here quite often for Dessert Bowl which is just around the corner behind Arbite.

When I stepped into Arbite, I felt like I stepped into another 'dessert bowl' because the truffle fries smell was so overwhelming. If you've visited dessert bowl before then you'd probably understand what I mean. (the moment you open the door... the durian fragrance completely engulfs you.)

We went there on a Saturday afternoon with no reservations and we're pretty lucky to get seats without having to wait.

The thing about Arbite is... it's freaking-noisy. I mean it. Felt like the room/cafe was too small and everyone's almost raising their voices talking. It's not exactly your quiet cafe like The Coffee Daily but those really busy and noisy cafe. I was pretty annoyed because I had to raise my voice a couple of times when I was talking to Mike whose just seated opposite me.

They offer quite a extensive choice of food and I thought that I should try the truffle fries (the smell was just too tempting to resist) well but, I was a little disappointed with it. The truffle fries smelt good but doesn't taste as good as I expected it to be. Maybe because I'm a little biased against it because it's steak cut and not shoestring. I rather have my skinny fries. Those steak cuts are way too much and not even with any truffle taste. I ordered Smoked Salmon Florentine. I must say that when it was served to me, I was disappointed at the portion and particularly only one poached egg. I was expecting myself to get two. But as I started feasting on it, I realize the portion was just right. (but also it could be because I was stuffed with the steak cut potatoes... so I really can't tell.) Mike had the Arbite Breakfast which I must say, it's huge. For a big eater like him, that filled his tummy to the brim (together with the steak fries I must emphasis because it's just so filling). We both were happy with our mains, just that his sauteed mushrooms was horrible. Tasteless, totally. But other then that, it was good.

Oh, something that I would go back for is their Ice Mint Tea I ordered. I really like it but Mike says it taste like Listerine or something. I'm a peppermint/mint/spearmint lover (that explains 'pepperminter') so I could be biased. Then again, you can come and try it for yourself.

I might come back here, but never ordering the fries anymore. Then again, the prices are slightly on the higher side.. So, maybe.. in a long while, once.

Cafe: Waffle Slayer

I've been to strangers' reunion once and thought that the food was kinda pricey and didn't really feel it was worth it. (you can read the entry here.) So I saw Waffle Slayer on the magazines and thought that a squid ink waffle was rather interesting and wanted to try it out. I've also heard comments from friends saying that strangers' waffles are pretty decent too.

So Mike and I made our way down to waffle slayers on a Saturday afternoon. Since we're been to strangers' reunion before, we roughly knew where it was located. If you haven't been to strangers', I'm sure you'd miss the entrance to waffle slayer. There's basically no signage or board to say it's slayers. But just remember, it's just right beside strangers, and you'd probably see a queue outside strangers. There wasn't any queue for us at slayer when we reached (at about 1plus) but shortly after it was a super long queue.

Well, waffle slayer serves you not just their waffle menu but also strangers' brunch menu. So you can find like all-day breakfast and sides like their truffle fries too.

We both wanted to each get a savoury and sweet waffle but upon knowing that we could order the all-day breakfast, we went ahead with 1 side, which is truffle fries. Another main, all-day breakfast and ended off with a sweet waffle and 2 drinks to go along.

I am pleasantly pleased with the waffle! I can't compare it with salted caramel's because it's completely different. I had the red velvet waffle and man.. it's really good. Red velvet waffles with chocolate chips, some sugar coated cereals, orange slices and vanilla ice cream. (huge portion of ice cream!)

Just remember this 'old' looking door, this is waffle slayers.
Everything on the menu just seems delicious. Okay I need to try the squid ink, the peanut butter and the matcha.

Cafe mocha @ $5.50
Just, nothing fantastic.

Iced mocha @ $6.50

Truffle fries @ $12.90

Florentine @ $17.90

Eggs where good but I guess for this portion, the price I'm paying is slightly too much.
Oh and this is from strangers' kitchen. So.... meh, nothing fantastic.

Finally, the spotlight!
Red Velvet Waffles @ $14.90

It was really good. And there's some orange with it too.
Which I thought it was peach and... my face changed the moment I ate it.

Totally-eating-this-again.

No go for the menu from stangers, just order the waffles, have some plain water and that's sufficient.
